A dog walker got stuck in a park last night after it was locked up while he was still inside.

The man had to call firefighters who cut the chains on the gate of Royston Park in The Wrythe after he and his two terrier-type dogs got locked in just after 8pm yesterday.

A Sutton fire station spokesman said: "I think someone must have come and locked it up at 8pm and he didn't realise. He could probably have climbed out but his dogs couldn't. We cut the chains and he came out. I think he was a bit embarrassed."

The Park Rangers used to drive through the park in their vehicle with headlights on clearing the park of any stragglers before locking up. Who decided to abandon a common sense procedure and why?
