Sutton's O'Neill's takes part in world record irish dancing attempt for St Patrick's day celebrations

St Patrick's Day usually involves people enjoying a pint of Guinness at a pub and this year is no different - except for the small matter of a world record attempt.

O'Neill's in Sutton High Street will be taking part in an Guinness World Record attempt for the most people Irish dancing at the same time tonight (Thursday).

The pub, along with its suitably merry customers, will be joined by 48 other branches simultaneously at 8pm to try and set a new record, which currently stands at 10,036.

Money raised on the night though selling St Pat's hats and a prize draw will go to the Royal Marsden hospital in Sutton.

Elaine Palmer, manager of the Sutton branch, said: "This is our first record attempt and we want the people of Sutton top join us and help us smash the record and have great fun at the same time."

The jig starts at 7pm, but the world record attempt begins at 8pm.

The current record, set in 2007, saw 10,036 people doing the jib at the Dublin Irish Festival in Ohio, USA.

Anyone who wants to help beat that record should arrive at the pub from 7pm, ready to begin at 8pm and be prepared to dance for five minutes.
