Forty fare dodgers fined for avoiding train fares from Ewell to Cheam

It's not fare: 43 ticket dodgers were caught last week. It's not fare: 43 ticket dodgers were caught last week.

More than 40 young people were fined for trying to dodge train fares in just over an hour last week.

Police had been tipped off that large groups of young people have been avoiding the £1.70 fare between Ewell and Cheam and set up a sting at Cheam station on Thursday, March 14.

Officers stopped and fined 43 young people £20 each - making £860 in just an hour-and-a-half.

The operation involved officers from Sutton police's safer transport team and six revenue protection officers from Southern trains.

It's interesting that the 'young people' travel from Ewell (I presume they mean Ewell East) to Cheam without paying a fare of £1.70.

I'm guessing that these are Nescot Students who have free bus travel permits so take advantage of a one-stop 'hop' on the train to Cheam and then pick up the bus for free.

As there are no barriers at either station Southern Rail created a 'temptation' that the youngsters thought they could exploit....... so they will now have to re-think their travel plans and either pay the fare between stations or travel all the way by bus!

Nice to see police resources being used to target the young, and act as revenue collectors for a private rail company. Way to go. Next week they're helping Arriva levy pensioners who haven't got an up-to-date photo on their bus pass.
