A vigilante group of motorists are getting their own back on the borough's CCTV cars.

The cars, which have taken well over £1m from drivers in parking tickets since they were introduced in Sutton two years ago, are being targeted by drivers who have had enough.

A Sutton branch of anti-CCTV car group NoToMOB has been set up and has been following the CCTV cars around to warn drivers they are being watched and will be fined for parking infringements.

A member of the group from Rosehill, who did not want to be named but goes by the name Overlord, said he is tired of the cars making money for the council.

Overlord, 72, said: "I used to be a courier and I got so many parking tickets and I would contest every single one and win.

"These cars are a nuisance and they are a fraud. They offer unfair tickets and make the council a fortune - well, not if I can help it.

"The Government says the purpose of parking tickets are to dissuade motorists from breaking the rules.

"They say they do not want to issue tickets, well we are helping them.

"We are helping motorists not to get tickets, and so therefore we are assisting the council."

A council spokesperson said: "We send out CCTV cars for the safety of our borough's residents and motorists and to enforce parking law.

"The cars focus on areas where parking can be an issue - for instance outside schools at peak hours - to prevent the build up of illegally parked vehicles which could be a danger to children and other vulnerable road users in the area."
