The Netherlands is considering moving its embassy to Nine Elms, with other governments expected to follow.

The Dutch government's property advisers, Cushman & Wakefield, confirmed the Royal Kingdom of the Netherlands (RKN) plans to relocate its embassy from Hyde Park Gate.

A spokeswoman said: "Cushman & Wakefield advised the RKN on the land acquisition, where it is intended a new embassy building will be constructed which meets their modern day requirements.

"One of the drivers for a relocation to Nine Elms was for the RKN to be part of the exciting regeneration and transformation of this area of London."

A spokesman for the Hyde Park Gate-based embassy said the building is up for sale, but would not confirm where they intend to move.

It comes after the United States won approval from Wandsworth Council in 2009 to relocate its embassy to Nine Elms, from Grosvenor Square in central London.

It has also been reported the Chinese government wants to move into the area and is in talks with the Royal Mail to relocate to the London Mail Centre, which is close to the US embassy building.

The US "glass cube" embassy is expected to be completed by 2016.
