An esteemed trumpeter, who played on every James Bond soundtrack, has died at his home in Claygate.

Derek Watkins, 68, who became a professional trumpet player at the age of 17, died surrounded by his family on Friday, March 22, after losing his two-year battle with a rare form of cancer called synovial sarcoma.

He and his wife Wendy have lived in Claygate area for 44 years.

As well as playing on all 23 Bond tracks from Dr No in 1962 to last year’s Skyfall, Derek performed with, amongst many others, the Beatles, Elton John, Frank Sinatra, the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra during a glittering career.

Mr Watkins, who is survived by wife Wendy and his three children Sarah, Ellie and Sean, was born into a musical family in Reading and was initially taught to play the cornet by his father aged four.

Tributes and messages of condolences poured in for Mr Watkins, who, according to editor of The Brass Herald Philip Biggs, is widely considered to be the foremost British Big Band trumpet player of all time.

Wendy Watkins, his widow, said: “Derek battled cancer for exactly two years and from the very beginning showed immense strength of character by working through all his chemotherapies right up until 12 February this year.

“He completed many film and recording sessions, including the latest James Bond film Skyfall, and he was then presented to HRH Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall at the Royal Premiere of that film, a very proud day signifying recognition of his contribution to all the James Bond movies over the years.

“Derek's courage inspired his family, friends and colleagues and his dedication and love for them was a joy to behold.

“As a family we are so very proud as tributes pour in from all over the world for this wonderful and immensely talented trumpet player.

“He will be remembered not only for his unique talent as a musician but also someone whose whole life was centred on his love for his family.”

Derek’s funeral will be held at The Holy Trinity Church, Claygate at 2pm on Monday, April 8 followed by a private burial.

More than 500 people are expected to attend the funeral.

The family are asking for donations in Derek’s memory to be made payable to Sarcoma UK via Lodge Bros, Funeral Directors at Waynflete House, 78 High Street, Esher, KT10 9QS.
