A late-night police chase through Epsom ended in a man being arrested for a pet shop burglary which took place seven miles away.

The burglary, at Pets Corner on West Street, in Dorking, happened at 12.15am on Sunday, March 31, after the burglars, believed to be a group of three, gained entry to the shop by forcing open the fire exit.

Nothing was taken in the burglary, but £1,400 worth of damage was caused to the store.

Police carried out a search of the area and a car was seen being driven in suspicious circumstances.

They tried to stop the car, but it made off, and police continued to follow it through Leatherhead and Ashtead before it stopped just outside of Epsom town centre.

A short time later, a man in his 20s was arrested on suspicion of burglary.

Detective Constable Lewis Flanagan, of Epsom CID, said: "I would appeal to anyone who has information on this offence to contact officers and help bring those responsible to justice.

"Did you see anyone acting suspiciously in the area in the days prior to the offence taking place? Or have you heard anyone discussing the incident and think they may be involved?"

Darren Axten, 23, from Coulsdon, was charged with burglary on Monday, April 1, and is due to appear at court at a later date.

Anyone with information should call the police on 101, quoting reference MV/13/1205, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
