A alleged gunman, accused of murder by his best friend, has told a court he is the victim of a "horrendous" betrayal.

Kyrone Daley, 19, claims Sanchez Thomas, also 19, shot South Norwood rapper Umar Tufail in the head on July 15 last year.

The two childhood friends are standing trial at the Old Bailey for jointly conspiring to murder 25-year-old Mr Tufail, but offer conflicting accounts of who fired the fatal shot.

Mr Tufail was shot moments after climbing into his car outside his family home in Wharncliffe Road.

Mr Thomas was driving the car carrying the gunman, with Mr Daley as passenger, as it pulled up alongside Mr Tufail's.

Mr Daley, of Unity Close, alleges that Mr Thomas pulled a gun from underneath his seat and shot Mr Tufail through the car's open window.

But Mr Thomas, who grew up near Mr Daley before moving to Brixton, claims a second passenger known as Pauser had fired the gun and the pair had offered him a lift moments earlier.

The jury heard that Mr Thomas then "panicked", driving away from the scene of the shooting before hiding out at a friend's house in Fulham.

He told the court: "I was taking it in that this guy had shot someone. I was thinking about the possibility that Umar had died and that someone had just fired a gun in my mother's car."

The Old Bailey heard that Mr Thomas later phoned his brother to tell him to hide his mother's car keys because he feared she would be seen driving it and arrested.

He admitted that he did not call the police, even though he believed Mr Tufail to be dead, because he was "scared of the repercussions."

Mr Thomas said: "Pauser told me he would bun me if I told anyone. He said he would kill me. I took that threat seriously."

But Tim Moloney, defending Mr Daley, alleged that Mr Thomas had fabricated Pauser's role in the death to cover his own back.

Mr Moloney  told the Old Bailey that Mr Daley, his girlfriend Natasha Henry and Mr Thomas's cousin all denied Mr Thomas's claims to have told them about Pauser in the aftermath of the shooting.

The jury also heard Mr Daley and Mr Thomas were such good friends that Mr Daley had the name of Mr Thomas's son tatooed on his hand.

Mr Moloney said: "You have been friends all your life, there was no difficulty between you on that day and he has your son's name tattooed on your hand, and when somebody else shoots Mr Tufail he blames you. Why do you think he would do that?

"That is a horrendous thing to do."

Mr Thomas replied: "Yes, it is horrendous."

Both Mr Daley and Mr Thomas both deny murder as the case continues.
