Firefighters had to lift the roof off a car with hydraulically powered cutters to rescue a man yesterday.

A heavy goods vehicle hit the back of a Renault car on the Leatherhead Bypass just before the M25 junction at 11am.

Firefighters cut the roof off the car to rescue the man, thought to be in his thirties.

A Leatherhead firefighter said the main reason was that he had suspected back injuries rather than damage to the car.

He said: "We obviously put him in a spine board and then put him in the ambulance to go to hospital."

He said the road was closed briefly with police directing traffic in both directions and added: "It was very congested."
