The Post Office said Crown branches were losing £40million a year and accused the Communication Workers Union of ignoring the 'harsh realities' the company faces.
The Harsh realities the Post Office faces are entirely due to the EU. While Tony Blair was Prime Minister the EU demanded that Royal Mail must be “opened up” to competition. What the EU meant was that Royal Mail’s postal services, which formerly enjoyed a monopoly and provided an excellent public and social service, had to lose its profitable business services to Dutch and German competitors.
As part of the deal, Royal Mail was forced to deliver its competitors mail at less than the cost of a second class stamp. Thus the UK public is subsidising the profits of Dutch and German companies which are being sent out of the country. More competition is supposed to result in better and cheaper services being offered to consumers. Typically, not where the EU has anything to do with it!
