Epsom, Sutton and St Helier hospitals are to be refurbished and improved thanks to a £9million cash boost.

Funded by Epsom and St Helier hospital trust’s annual capital development programme, the money will fund a revamp of buildings, wards and clinics, and the buying of a range of life-saving equipment.

Improvements will be made to the roof at Epsom Hospital, there will be new equipment in the operating theatre at St Helier, and new anaesthetic monitors.

A total of £100,000 is to be spent on improving the system for piping gases to patients across Epsom, and £1.1million will be spent on general maintenance at St Helier, including replacing old windows and roof maintenance across the hospital buildings.

A further £450,000 is to be spent on general ward upgrades, including refurbishing the coronary care unit at St Helier and the kitchen on Buckley ward at Epsom, and £250,000 will be used to create additional single rooms for patients at Epsom and St Helier, which offer greater privacy and help protect very ill patients from spreading or contracting infections.

Karen Breen, deputy chief executive and chief operating officer, said: "As an organisation, it is our absolute priority to give each and every one of our patients the very best of care in a warm and welcoming environment, and ensuring our hospitals are clean, safe and stocked with up-to-date equipment is absolutely key.

"This cash boost means we will spend nearly £25,000 every single day over the next year on upgrading our hospitals and equipment.

"Every project that we’re undertaking came from suggestions and requests made by staff working in our departments and wards."
