Trains have been cancelled until further notice after a person was hit by a train at Sutton station.

A man in his late 30s was struck by the train at about 8.30am today on platform One - but he has survived and has been taken to St George's Hospital with head and serious leg injuries.

Sutton station was shut after the incident and the platform has been cleared. It was not expected to reopen until 11am.

London’s air ambulance landed in the nearby B&Q car park and Brighton Road was closed outside the station for about an hour.

The injured man has now been taken to hospital after being brought out on a stretcher, shortly before 9.30am.

Affected passengers at Sutton station are being told to get a bus to Wimbledon and get trains from there.

Earlier passengers at mainline stations across south-west London were told services had been cancelleed from 8.50am and that the network would be frozen for "a couple of hours".

Announcers warned passengers that train services on the Southern network would be cancelled and the rest of the morning would see delays from Epsom, West Croydon, Wimbledon, Mitcham Eastfields, Clapham Junction and Balham.

A London Ambulance spokeswoman said: “We were called this morning at 8.30am to reports of someone hit by a train at Sutton station.

"We sent one ambulance crew, a duty officer and a london air ambulance attended.

“The man has been taken to St George’s Hospital with head injuries and serious leg injuries. He is conscious and breathing.

“He was taken by ambulance with an air ambulance doctor on board.”

Police at the scene have said they expect the station to be closed until about 11am at the earliest.

Southern trains have said as a result of the incident there are delays of up to 60 minutes through Sutton and the delays will continue until further notice.

It said First Capital Connect trains cannot currently call at West Sutton, Sutton Common, St Helier, Morden South, South Merton and Wimbledon.

  • South West Trains are accepting passengers between Wimbledon and London Waterloo.
  • Southern, London Underground, London Buses and Croydon TramLink are also accepting passengers via any reasonable route.
  • South West Trains are also accepting passengers to and from Epsom.
  • Passengers can also use London Underground and London Buses via any reasonable route.
