Two bike racers with a difference will go head-to-head as they compete for a top sporting trophy.

But these two finely tuned athletes aren't Joanna Rowsell and Bradley Wiggins, in fact, they are both only three-years-old.

Wallington tots Cormac Watson and Bailey Ash are among the favourites in the local qualifying round for the Strider Balance Bike Championships, due to be held in Mitcham next month.

Strider balance bikes are like normal bikes but do not feature pedals.

The qualifying round for the championship will be held at the Merton BMX track on May 5 with top performers getting the chance to compete for the national title at the home of British Cycling in Manchester in September.

Bailey said: "I can’t wait. I love going over the bumps and racing."

His mum Becki-Lee Ash added: "Bailey has always loved getting on their balance bike and zooming around the park."

Cormac's mum Tamsin Watson said: "He loves the chance to race against his friends. The events have been set up to give the riders an experience of riding and racing at a major event and with Cormac’s competitive streak we’re hoping that he can go on to race for the British title."

Places are still open for the event in Merton. Organiser Melanie Thomas said: "The events are open to anyone, no matter their ability, with opportunities to train and ride at organised coaching sessions before the big day.

"They are designed to be exciting, yet safe, environments for children to explore and play on two wheels, with the added excitement of racing."
