Readers have reacted angrily to the news a town centre car park is being sold by the council to make way for an office block.

At a meeting on Monday evening councillors voted in favour of selling the Brighton Road car park to Subsea 7 – a subsea engineering and construction company.

The proposals, to sell the site in order to make way for a state-of-the-art office block, are expected to bring a large influx of highly skilled professionals to the borough as well as creating jobs.

But the news has sparked a fierce reaction from some of our readers and this is what they had to say:

“What about the abandoned and boarded up buildings right next to the station? Seems crazy to demolish a well utilised and money raising property – when others right next to it stand derelict and crumbling.”

Paul Ray

“I think it’s wrong to turn the car park into another office block.  We have enough empty office blocks already in Sutton.

"Why can’t they take over one of those? From the plans that I have seen it looks more like something that should be in a factory outlet rather than in the middle of a residential area.”

Judy McEntire

“As a person who works in Quadrant House which does not have any parking except for directors and parks in the London Road car park, I along with a lot of my colleagues, will now be parking in residential streets as the alternative car park in Gibson Road is more expensive.

“But the big plus for me is that I will not be giving the council £864 a year in parking fees.”

Ian

“This certainly should not be demolished to make way for Subsea 7 – there are plenty of areas in Sutton that could also be demolished without impacting on all the car park users of which I am one.

“A use of the sites already empty for a number of years would have been a cleverer response from the council – shame on them.”

Nel Weddle

"I am sick of people thinking that jobs are the most important thing for Sutton.  Facilities for the residents of Sutton are always pushed to the bottom of the pile.

"The sale of Brighton Road car park will push cars to park on residential roads - thus annoying those residents.

"It is all very well councillors pushing for people to move to Gibson Road but that is more expensive and further for me to walk to my office at the top of the high street.

"It will be even more hazardous in the snow and ice which is becoming far more frequent every winter."

Kay Hévey

“No please do not close down the Sutton car park it’s the best one in the area – and easier for people who need to travel to London via the train system rather than drive all the way – so no more offices are required.”

Pamela Cook
