Elmbridge Council is seeking two volunteers to maintain the highest standards of audit scrutiny.

The audit and standards committee has been comprised for several years of not just of elected councillors, but also those appointed specifically for their skills and expertise in other areas.

Councillor Ruth Mitchell, chairman of the audit and standards committee, said: “Crucially, these people have no political axe to grind and can bring an informed and independent perspective to the work of the committee.

“We’re looking for respected individuals who can work with us to maintain and improve the quality of our decision-making processes.”

The position, which carries public responsibility, is unpaid and would be suited to someone with experience in auditing or financial procedures and knowledge of local government.

Applicants should have no connection with the council’s political groups or be a close friend of relative of a member or officer of the council, to ensure their opinion is truly independent.

To find out more about the role, and to make an application, visit elmbridge.gov.uk or call the head of legal services on 01372 474192.

Closing date for applications is May 3.
