South West Trains has apologised to commuters after a signal failure left passengers stranded in Surbiton.

The fault at Clapham Junction station caused severe delays to the evening rush hour service, with angry customers taking to Twitter to vent their ire.

Kwaku Akonta tweeted: “@SW_Trains Can I have a generous refund of my train fare back. Disgraceful service still waiting at Surbiton for a train home-from work.”

Paul Mills tweeted: “@SW_Trains the train at surbiton waited until the connecting train pulled in and then pulled away before we could get on. #awful”.

But smorgasbord tweeted: “Laughing in the face of @SW_Trains delays having taken the tube to Wimbledon & picking up mainline to Surbiton.”

A South West Trains spokeswoman said: “We are very sorry for the disruption experienced by many of our passengers yesterday evening.

“This was due to a signalling problem at Clapham Junction which affected evening peak services on suburban lines.”

She added: “Even the smallest incident during peak commuting times can unfortunately quickly cause delays to hundreds of trains.”
