The Rose Theatre's latest play set in Kingston has proved a hit with the locals, becoming a record-breaking box office smash.
Smack Family Robinson, written by Richard Bean and starring Denise Welch and Keith Allen, has broken box-office records for takings on Friday to Sunday, beating a record previously held by A Midsummer Night’s Dream, starring Dame Judi Dench.
For its run at the Rose, the play has been re-imagined in Kingston, and even features a scene where Allen reads the Surrey Comet.
Rose Theatre chief executive Robert O’Dowd said: “We are delighted that Richard Bean’s fantastic play Smack Family Robinson set in Kingston and Petersham has been received so well by our audience.
“Smack is going down a storm and the audience loves the localisation of the humour and locations and when Keith is reading the Comet on stage. “We had a fantastic weekend, beating all previous takings for Friday to Sunday.”
Smack Family Robinson runs until April 20.
