An ex-Kingston retailer created a “pop-up shop” series to inspire struggling independent businesses.
Laura Whiting, 25, opened the Peek Boutique at the Market House last weekend.
She combined clothing, art work, coffee and snacks to add a new dimension to high-street shopping.
She said: “The whole idea was to create this environment where people could come in and enjoy the experience. People shopped and then sat down and had a cup of coffee and cake.
“We got really good feedback from everybody. They said it was really nice to see something different.”
Miss Whiting worked at clothing store Pie in Kingston and studied fashion at the University for the Creative Arts in Epsom.
She said her experience in retail, with many high street shops closing down, inspired her to develop the Peek Boutique.
She said: “People have not got enough time any more. You have got to offer them something extra, an experience each time they come.”
Students from Kingston University and Kingston College also had their work displayed.
Heidi Kitch, 40, a second year student in art and design at Kingston University, said: “It is nice to display the work in Kingston, especially with it being in the Market Place in a historical market town.
“I like the idea of a pop-up shop. It is really nice for the community.”
Miss Whiting’s next boutique will be coming to the Market House on May 11, 12 and 13.
