Plans have been re-submitted for an eight-storey hotel in Wimbledon town centre.

The hotel would rise above bar and grill restaurant Henry J Beans located on the ground floor of a four storey office block in The Broadway, Wimbledon.

Three stories of the 1960s building above the restaurant would be demolished under the plans with a new eight storey, 29m, hotel with 149 rooms built in its place.

Developers were refused permission for a seven storey hotel on the site in August 2011 because of the impact it would have on neighbouring residents and concerns over its overall bulk and size.

Revised plans were submitted in December 2011 with a rear extension to the hotel scaled back in an effort to reduce the impact to residents.

However the overall height of the building was increased.

Twenty letters of objection have been received with concerns ranging over the impact of its height and bulk, the impact to nearby residents and a lack of parking which could compound congestion.

Councillor Henry Nelless, who stands opposed to the development, said: "I support the view that Wimbledon requires a quality, high end, hotel offering and if this site were being proposed for that then I may well be of a different opinion.

"However, this application seeks to situate a building which is taller than its neighbours, will cause a significant change of the local skyline, is of absolutely no design merit and is far too large for the site."

The application will be considered by the planning applications committee on April 18.
