Abseilers braved wind and rain to step off the roof of a racecourse on Saturday after having stepped back from the brink last month.

The abseil at the Queens Stand at Epsom Downs Racecourse in aid of Princess Alice Hospice was postponed at the last minute on March 16 due to high winds and heavy rain.

But 66 people returned on Saturday to abseil from the 90ft high roof.

Sandra Harper, 65, from West Ewell, had been in her harness ready to go when the decision to postpone the abseil was made in March.

Ms Harper completed the challenge second time around in memory of her son Dan 'Spanners' Riglin who died at the hospice aged 32.

She said: "Epsom Grandstand is a very poignant place to be doing the abseil as it was where Dan got married.

"I'm scared of heights, so Dan would probably say 'What the hell do you think you are doing mum?'"

Naomi Myers, 39, from Epsom, abseiled in memory of her grandmother who died three years ago.

She said: "My legs feel like jelly now but it was a great experience."

Ashleigh Tennent, senior community fundraiser at the hospice, said: 'It is always a great feeling to see so many supporters completing their personal challenges.

"This year we had a real family event with people ranging from 12 to 70 years of age.

"It is testament to the dedication and enthusiasm of our supporters that they battled through the rain, now they have the challenge of collecting their sponsorship money.

"The participants have pledged an incredible £17,000."
