Two women needed hospital treatment after fire broke out in their flat.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at a flat in Sherfield Gardens, Roehampton, on April 10 at 10pm.

The fire, believed to have been caused by unattended tea lights, caused serious damage to the living room.

Both women were taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

A total of 14 firefighters from Wandsworth and Tooting stations tackled the fire.

The blaze has provoked firefighters to issue a warning on the safety of candles.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said: "It is a good idea to put candleholders on a heat resistant surface like a plate and don’t forget hot tea lights can melt plastic surfaces such as the top of a television or the side of a bath.

"Also make sure you put candles and tea lights out when you go out of the room and when you go to sleep."
