Patients have labelled Croydon University Hospital as among the worst in the country in a new survey.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) released results of their adult inpatients survey for NHS Trusts across the country yesterday.

The questionnaire had 10 sections which cover waiting, care and treatment, doctors, nurses and patients’ overall impression of their experience.

About 400 patients who completed the survey rated the trust as ‘worse’ compared to other trusts, on seven sections of the questionnaire. They rated the trust as the ‘same’ for three sections.

There were no sections which the Trust was rated better than the national average.

A spokesman for Croydon Health Services said in comparison with the 2011 survey, there was an improvement in 27 questions.

These included the rating of hospital food and staff response to calls from patients. The spokesman added fewer people said they shared facilities with patients of the opposite sex.

Director of Nursing, Zoe Packman, said some of the changes they have implemented were not in place when the survey was carried out.

She said: “These results are obviously cause for concern. We are putting in place a range of improvements including ensuring we have the right staff in the right place at the right time with the right focus on caring.”

Chief Executive John Goulston added: “While many inpatients do have a good experience at our hospital, this is not as consistent as it should be and this is disappointing.”

Gavin Barwell, MP for Croydon Central, said there were a lot of positives about Croydon University Hospital but it needed more consistency.

He said: “There are parts of our local hospital that provide very good care. There are a lot of dedicated staff working there.

“Nevertheless, the results of the in-patient survey are clear evidence that care is not consistently good enough.

“We have a new Chairman and permanent Chief Executive in place and I will be meeting with them regularly to assure myself that the improvements they are planning happen.

“And they ensure that services in all parts of the hospital are consistently up to the standard my constituents have a right to expect.”
