A Raynes Park post office has officially been offered up to retailers looking to go into partnership.

The Amity Grove branch is one of 70 Crown post offices inviting retail partners to come forward and manage it.

Crown post offices, owned solely by the Post Office, make up three per cent of its portfolio, but currently make a loss of £40m per year.

The Post Office operates more than 10,000 branches through franchises and retail partnerships and argues the change is necessary to "modernise" and maintain their network enabling them to invest £70m in its remaining 300 crown branches.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has condemned the "deeply unpopular" plans.

Billy Hayes, general secretary of the CWU, said: "Ultimately, this is about cost cutting and that's where the government comes in.

"They want to reduce the amount of money provided for Post Office services and these cuts are leading to deeply unpopular proposals to close Crown post offices and remove services from High Streets."

Should a suitable retailer come forward there will be a public consultation on the plans with any transfers expected to take place before April 2015.

If no suitable partner can be found the Crown branch will remain.
