Merton's top cop and an Olympic gold medallist will be cycling 170-miles through the Scottish Highlands this weekend in support of Comic Relief.

The two-day 'Tour de Scotland’ will see Det Chief Supt Darren Williams, rower Sophie Hosking (pictured below) and a team of six, cycle more than 7,000 feet, the equivalent of climbing Ben Nevis and Snowden, and visiting every Ryman store in Scotland in a bid to raise £10,000 for the charity.

The attempt, which was postponed last month due to the terrible weather conditions, has been organised in partnership with Dragon's Den star Theo Paphitis who owns stationery company Rymans which is based in Wimbledon.

The team arrived in Scotland on Wednesday and will set off on their challenge on May 2.

Sophie Hosking said: “I’m really excited to be involved.

“I think it’s going to be quite a tough ride but I think it is going to be really rewarding.

“I have tried to do more cycling recently to prepare myself for the challenge and trying to adapt my fitness to being on a bike for a long time.

“But we did used to do a bit of cycling as part of our training so it is not that alien to me.”
