Police are stepping up patrols in a road after vandals tore apart a community garden and threatened a pensioner.

Michael Connolly, 72, contacted police after yobs pulled heads off daffodils he planted in Old Hospital Close, Balham.

He has been planting in public gardens and flowerbed in the cul-de-sac for two years,  including outside a nursing home for people with learning disabilities.

When he confronted the teenagers they said he was 'too old' for the estate.

Police have responded by assuring their will be visible presence in the area to deter any anti social behaviour.

Police Constable Mehul Patel, of Nightingale Safer Neighbourhood Team, said officers are speaking with the culprits.

He said: "We are currently in the process of speaking to the persons concerned as well as their parents and guardians.

"I will be liaising with the housing association responsible for the families identified in Old Hospital Close as I am looking to implement a good neighbour agreement, or acceptable behaviour contract in hope this will assist the matter."
