Residents have said they heard explosions before a fire broke out at a semi-detached house in Gladstone Road, Kingston, earlier this evening.
Six fire engines are tackling the blaze, which is under control, London Fire Brigade (LFB) said.
Sharon Rees, from nearby Bonner Hill Road, said: “I heard a loud bang like an explosion and then saw really thick black smoke.
“I heard another one. I then saw the flames and called the fire brigade. They told me somebody was already on their way.”
An LFB spokesman said the house was empty when the fire broke out. He said: “The fire is under control and we have started investigating the cause but it is not known at this time.
“The fire was in a semi-detached property and has affected quite a large part of that.
“We have had reports of explosions and we are looking into that.”
