Health bosses' "preferred option" for the closure of accident and emergency departments at hospitals in SW London has been formally published this morning.

The Better Services, Better Value Review is recommending a further downgrade at St Helier Hospital on top of it losing its accident and emergency (A&E) and maternity departments.

The proposals were published this morning on the Better Services Better Value (BSBV) website.

BSBV’s preferred option for the region’s healthcare is St Helier becoming a "local hospital" losing its A&E and maternity units and Epsom also losing their front line services but becoming a centre for elective care.

BSBV's second, but less preferred, recommendation is Epsom becoming the local hospital with St Helier becoming the centre for elective care.

Their third and least preferred option is St Helier continuing as an acute hospital with Epsom becoming the centre for elective care and Croydon University Hospital becoming the most downgraded.
