Gormet treats from across the South East were on offer at the farmers’ market in Epsom marketplace on Sunday.

Among the produce brought along by more than 25 stallholders were pork sausages from Lingfield and smoked trout from Tillingbourne, hand-popped popcorn from Woking and cured meats from Chobham.

Market operator Carolyne Walter said there was a marvellous atmosphere and it was very good natured.

She said: "We try to keep things as local as possible, but you don’t have many traditional farmers in the Epsom area.

"So, for instance, fruit and veg come in from Kent, the fish comes up from Selsey. We have local home-made producers who make cakes, they make bread, they make jam.

"We have cheese that comes up from Bath - they do the most amazing cheese toasties."

Mrs Walter said it was important to try to keep things "inter-related" and that producers - such as cupcake makers - were encouraged to source as many ingredients as possible locally.

Derek Clayson, a farmer for more than 20 years who lives in Sutton, has been selling eggs at the market for 10 years.

Mr Clayson said his Hollacombe Farm eggs were supplied last year to the Olympic athletes’ village in Stratford, east London, and his three biggest clients were the Savoy, the Landmark and Simpson’s-in-the-Strand.

Alan and Sue Winborn, who live in Croydon, have been coming to the market for six months.

Mrs Winborn said: "The food here is absolutely excellent. We have our special stalls that we like. We always spend a lot of money because the quality is excellent.

"I have never bought anything that’s bad here - the quality is good and it’s well worth the journey."

The market, which runs on the first Sunday of each month, is now in its fourteenth year.
