A leisure centre is to be formally renamed after a Paralympic hero later this month.

Sutton Arena in Carshalton is to be officially rebranded the David Weir Arena after the Wallington wheelchair racer on Thursday, May 16.

Weir, who won four golds at last year's Paralympic Games in London, will be on hand to take part in a formal renaming ceremony, during which he will start some races and hand out prizes to winners.

He said: "I am absolutely delighted. It is a very great honour.

"I have trained there and taken part in a few events there and it’s an excellent facility.

"My daughter goes to the leisure centre with her school and it will be very exciting for her to see my name over the door."

The centre was first opened as Carshalton Sports Arena in 1953, when it featured a 440-yard cinder track

Now it has state-of-the-art facilities for a range of sports, seats 300 spectators, and hosts a variety of regular events.
