A former New Malden milkman was presented with a hamper by his former bosses to celebrate turning 100 years old at the weekend.

Bill Evans, of Beechcroft Avenue, New Malden, celebrated his milestone with friends and family at his care home on Sunday.

Mr Evans was treated to a special hamper delivery to his doorstep by former bosses at Milk and More, which he worked for as a milkman for more than 45 years.

Recalling his time as a milkman, he said: “I really enjoyed every minute of it – meeting different people was really lovely.

“I came across a lot of people and I treated all my customers the same.

“They all really looked after me during Christmas.”

Mr Evans who was born in Bridgend, Wales, has outlived his twin brother and his partner, Hilda Chandler, who he lived with in New Malden.

Relative Keith Puckey said: “He used to eat a good fry up every day and always had lots of salt in his food – that could now be a recipe for a long life.

“He is a lovely person. He would do anything for anyone. He does not have an ounce of malice in him. He is just a very nice person.

“When Hilda died we wanted to look after him, but he disappeared a few times.

“This place is like home for him. We are so happy he is here.”

Mr Evans also served in the Army as a soldier in North Africa during WWII before he became a milkman doing the rounds with his father.

On turning 100, he said: “I feel very well. I like lounging around. I am enjoying retirement.”
