Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled three-metre high flames engulfing a car yesterday.

Three fire engines were called to the burning car parked in a driveway just off Hook Road in Epsom at 2.30pm.

The fire spread from the car to the fence and melted the gutters of a nearby house.

Firefighter Tom Howe, from Epsom fire station, said: "The car was 100 per cent damaged by fire.

"Because it was on a driveway there was a small amount of damage to surrounding property."

A Leatherhead firefighter described the remains of the car as a ‘crispy shell’.

He said: "The fence was burnt away but damage to the house was not too bad. The guttering started to melt.

"I believe it was an electrical fire from the car."
