A burglar has been jailed after being caught fleeing from the scene of his crime.

Oliver Hart, 21, was nabbed by police investigating a burglary at a house in Long Ditton on the morning of Thursday, April 4.

Following a call from a neighbour who had reported suspicious activity at the home at about 8.45am, officers from Surrey and Metropolitan Police swopped– and found Hart hiding in the garden of a nearby property.

A sock containing jewellery stolen from the home was recovered three days later and handed back to the victim.

Hart, formerly of Havers Avenue, Walton, pleaded guilty at Guildford Crown Court on Friday, May 17, to one count of burglary and was sentenced to 29 months in jail.

Police Constable Charlie Lacey praised the resident who reported the burglary, and asked others to do the same.

PC Lacey said: “This really was the best possible outcome with Hart now facing a jail term and the victim being reunited with their stolen property which was of huge sentimental value, including an Indian gold bangle that is more than 200 years-old, a locket and two wedding rings.

“This case really shows the value of members of the public reporting suspicious behaviour to us.

“Thanks to the concerned resident who reported this incident, we had officers on the scene in minutes and the offender quickly in custody.

“I would urge anyone who sees anyone acting suspiciously in their neighbourhood to call 101 immediately.”
