Epsom’s MP is stepping up the campaign to save Epsom Hospital, after he said Surrey’s GP commissioning group "agreed in principle" to axe its A&E, maternity and children’s units at a meeting on Friday.

Chris Grayling MP has today written to constituents outlining the next steps he plans to take after Friday’s meeting at Epsom Downs racecourse.

There Surrey Downs Clinical Commissioning Group (SDCCG) delegated responsibility for deciding on whether the proposals for Epsom Hospital, as formulated by the Better Services Better Value (BSBV) review, should go to public consultation, to just three of its members.

In his letter to constituents, Mr Grayling said that by making the decision, SDCCG "agreed to the principle of the plans to move ahead" and that the "meeting of the different GP groups involved in this process in two weeks time will almost certainly confirm that there will be a public consultation on downgrading Epsom Hospital".

He stated: "What was most disappointing was that the GP representatives made part of the  case for change on the basis of factually incorrect evidence, despite being challenged on the accuracy of what was being said.

"I have written to them following the meeting to raise concerns about what took place, and also to seek answers to key questions which remain unaddressed."

Mr Grayling said the Epsom Hospital Campaign steering group will meet this week to discuss "the next steps in this battle" and that he is planning to hold a meeting for those willing to become local organisers in the campaign on May 28.

If you would like to offer practical held to the campaign and want to attend the meeting email Mr Grayling at news@chrisgrayling.net.  Further details will then be released via email to those wishing to get involved.
