Innocent people will experience the sparse isolation of a police cell and find themselves in an interview room next week.

Visitors to Sutton police's open event next weekend will get a behind the scenes look at what officers do and see sights usually reserved for those who have found themselves on the wrong side of the law.

The Sutton Guardian got a sneak preview of two of the big attractions of the event which will take place on Sunday, June 2.

It includes a tour of the station's custody suite and a look at it's CCTV centre.

At the custody suite visitors will be able to enter through the same doors as high profile criminals including Stuart Hazell and sit in the cold, caged waiting area before they are shown the main desk where suspects' details are taken.

They will also see the equipment officers use to breathalyse people, take DNA samples and test for drugs before they get to see the inside of a cell.

Sutton police's 35 custody cells are tiny and equipped with nothing more than a padded platform for a bed and a toilet.

The whole space is clearly visible on via constantly monitored CCTV cameras.

People will then be able to see the interview rooms and the virtual court which is used so suspects can appear in magistrates' court via a video link meaning criminals can find themselves processed and convicted without leaving the building.

One of the other attractions is a look at the station's CCTV nerve centre where visitors will be able to see how the force's network of cameras allow officers to view the town from a range of angles, zoom in on suspects and even track them as they move around the borough.

Sutton Borough Commander Guy Ferguson said: "We look forward to welcoming many people to our Open Day. This is a great opportunity for people to see how we work and to talk to our officers.

"This is all about us being open and approachable and wanting to have the support of local residents."
