Firefighters were called to an out-of-control bonfire in Upper High Street, Epsom, yesterday evening.
An Epsom fire officer said firefighters noticed that the occupant of the property at which the bonfire occurred had large amounts of petrol and diesel, which were not stored in metal jerry cans.
The incident prompted another fire officer to warn people to be very careful when storing flammable liquids.
He said: "We are concerned about people storing large amounts of combustible fuels, such as diesel and petrol.
"The limit allowed is 30 litres and it should be stored in a metal, not a plastic, container."
