An elderly couple who sent their sofas to be upholstered seven months ago fear they may never get them back as the Croydon based company appears to have folded.

Beryl and Peter Henderson paid Lifestyle Covers over £2,000 to collect their three piece suite and two chairs, from their home in Swindon, Wiltshire and to upholster and return them.

The Imperial Way based company, collected the sofas on October 4, 2012, and were due to deliver them back to the couple in January, but the company made no contact for 10 weeks.

When Mrs Henderson got through to the factory she was told the material she had requested was discontinued and they were waiting for more samples.

The 81-year-old said: "Since January I have been calling them twice a week and we have sent four letters recorded delivery to them and had no reply.

"I found out our sofa was only upholstered a month ago and although I had been able to contact them I kept getting fobbed off.

"I rang them last week and they said the factory floor was full of customer's furniture waiting to be delivered.

"We decided to make arrangements to come up from Swindon and collect our furniture on May 18, but when I phoned them on May 16 to notify them of our plans the number wasn't recognised and their website was gone."

Mrs Henderson contacted Trading Standards in Swindon, who in turn contacted their counterparts at Croydon Council.

She added: "It's alright them closing but we want our furniture back. There are more people from all over the country that are affected not just local people, I know for a fact there is a lady in South Wales whose sofa was collected after ours."

A spokesman for Croydon Council said: "The trading standards team is aware that Lifestyle Covers appears to have ceased trading from the Connaught Business Centre address.

"The situation will be monitored and any consumers who feel they may be adversely affected by the company’s closure should contact adviceguide.org.uk/england."
