Now is your chance to help choose a piece of contemporary public art to commemorate the death of a suffragette at the Epsom Derby 100 years ago.

Epsom Council wants to erect the monument, in memory of Emily Davison, who was killed when she ran out in front of the King’s horse in 1913, on a roundabout on Epsom Downs.

A council spokesman said it is looking for a "significant, permanent and memorable piece of art that relates to the sacrifices and achievements made by women in the past that have helped to establish opportunities for their full and equal participation in UK society today".

Following a call to local artists for submissions, six proposals are now being displayed in the Ebbisham centre and the public can vote for their favourite until May 30.

A ballot box has been set up inside the Ebbisham Centre, with 160 votes already being cast.

This public vote will then form part of the final decision which will be taken by a selection committee comprising of Councillor Clive Woodbridge and Surrey artists Jonathan Parsons and Karl Newman.

The winner will be announced at the Ebbisham centre on June 4, with the winning design displayed there until June 17.

The spokesman said that funding for the project is not intended to come from council tax budgets and that businesses will have the chance to contribute and applications for grants will be submitted.

Planning permission will also need to be granted for the installation.

Councillor Jean Smith, heritage design champion for Epsom Council, said: "As a woman in local politics, I am pleased to see how far women have come in the political arena since the death of Emily Davison.

"I am delighted that a pivotal moment in women’s rights occurred here in Epsom and as a Downs conservator, I am elated to have the opportunity invite residents to be involved in selecting a work of public art as a legacy for future generations"
