Haiku poems written by children went on display at Bentalls this week
Children between the ages of 7 and 10 have been exploring Japanese short poems over the last few months as part of ‘Haiku Hopes’.
The project is part of Kingston Connections, a story-telling festival .
The poems of Nancy Bucke, 9, Sam Wakefield, 8, and Erin Crombie, 7, were three of the first twenty put on display.
The trio went to see their work at the department store.
Nancy, from St John’s Primary School, said: “We had a great time making up our poems and it’s brilliant to see it here."
The Kingston Connections team have been delivering workshops at primary schools across the borough, to encourage pupils to get creative.
The Bentalls Store will soon be host to fifty of the best haikus from the project.
Stuart Bird, writer in residence at Surbiton High School, who ran the workshops, said: “The quality of the poems is wonderful. You have children producing some thought provoking and beautiful verse.”
Kingston Connections takes place between June 24 and June 30 and includes former justice minister Jack Straw, a children’s TV star and the tale of Kingston’s 18th century ‘pornographer’, as well as puppets, folk singers and a community choir.
