Wandsworth Council has announced that the former "adventure" playground in Battersea Park is to re-open during the forthcoming half-term break.

The much-loved old playground was controversially demolished last autumn but, according to the council, the "exciting and new" equipment is set to be unveiled for the first time this weekend.

The "modernisation" of the new playground is not yet fully complete with further work due to be undertaken in the next few weeks.

Precise details of the new equipment are also not available but the local authority has assured residents it is in "discussions" to add an aerial walkway and high wires.

Children's services spokesman Councillor Kathy Tracey said: "We wanted to open the playground in time for the half-term holidays so that young visitors to the park would be able to enjoy the new play equipment.

"Phase one of the refurbishment is now complete. We hope to complete phase two, which involves the installation of some more play equipment and some landscaping in time for the start of the school summer holidays, although this is largely dependent on the weather.

"When it is all finished I am sure that it will prove very popular with children and their families."

As part of the new plans, part of the playground's vacant play building could also be used by voluntary groups, charities, professional tutors and entertainers.
