Dying for the Vote exhibition at Bourne Hall Museum, Ewell

On Monday 20 May 2013, Soroptimist International of Epsom & District organised a private, evening view of the 'Dying for the Vote' exhibition open at Bourne Hall Museum, Spring Street, Ewell, until 27th July. The exhibition commemorates the centenary of the death at Epsom of militant suffragette Emily Wilding Davison who collided with the King's horse, Anmer, during the running of the Derby horserace in June 1913. Emily's objective had been to draw the attention of King George V to the suffering endured by his female subjects who, at the time, were denied equal employment opportunity and basic human rights accorded to the majority of men, such as voting in Parliamentary elections. The surprise celebrity guest of the evening was star of stage and screen Anita Harris who played the part of pioneer nurse Florence Nightingale in the musical of the same name.
