A senior councillor and young people across Lambeth visited City Hall yesterday to promote a campaign for more police officers in the borough.

Councillor Jack Hopkins was joined by Jeremiah Emmanuel, Lambeth's deputy youth mayor, Elizabeth Boampong, deputy member of youth parliament and Samuel David, Lambeth's youth mayor.

They met Lambeth and Southwark’s London Assembly member, Val Shawcross AM, to discuss the concerns of young Lambeth residents before attending the monthly Mayor’s Question Time meeting, where Boris Johnson answers questioned from the assembly.

While they were visiting City Hall Samuel, Jeremiah and Elizabeth met Mr Johnson and discussed the 100 More Police campaign.

Coun Hopkins said: “I am delighted that Samuel, Jeremiah and Elizabeth have had the chance to meet Boris Johnson and tell the Mayor why Lambeth needs 100 more police today.

"Boris told us that he is delivering ‘5000 more police for London’, so surely 100 more police officers for Lambeth is not  much to ask.

"Lambeth has faced a huge 20 per cent cut in the number of police officers over the last two years, the biggest of any London borough.

"It’s time we were given our fair share of police officers to make our streets and homes safer.

2,836 people have signed Lambeth’s petition for 100 More Police.

The latest figures on the GLA website say the number of police officers in Lambeth have fallen by 230 officers, from 1,052 in May 2010 to 822 in May 2013.
