An award-winning home for the elderly has celebrated its 30th anniversary.

Fenner House, a sheltered home managed by the Walton Charity, on the corner of Mayfield Road and Queens Road, held a party for its residents with a glass of bubbly on Tuesday, May 21.

Janice Street, Walton Charity’s schemes manager, said: “It was a pleasure to see the residents enjoying the celebrations at their home of Fenner House.

“Fenner House is not only my place of work but also my home, which enables me to have closer contact with the residents.”

Katherine Davis, community support officer for the area, said: “It was a really lovely day, a nice opportunity for the residents to get together and celebrate. We had cakes made and champagne served.”

She said the highlights included a speech from Nigel Lucas, Walton Charity’s director of residential services, and the re-envisioning of an old photograph that was recently discovered.

Ms Davis said: “We recreated a photo taken on the opening in 1993. All of the residents took part in that and we also had some of the staff and the manager of Walton Charity.”

Some of the current residents have lived at Fenner House for more than 20 years.

Walton Charity manages two sheltered accommodation homes for the elderly, and a residential care home.

Ms Davis added: “It is still a very modern building. It looks just as fresh as it did back then. It won an architectural award. The residents all love living there and it is a very happy place to live and there are a lot of things going on.”
