The Tooting MP has assured his constituents that the police presence in the area will be ramped up following yesterday's brutal murder in south-east London.

Sadiq Khan, who is also the shadow justice minister, spoke out in the aftermath of the brutal killing of a plain-clothed soldier in Woolwich on Wednesday afternoon.

Following the incident supporters of the English Defenfce League clashed with police near two mosques in Woolwich.

Tooting, much like Woolwich, is a hugely multicultural area and Mr Khan is hoping his comments will put concerned residents at ease.

He said: "Tooting is a shining example of how communities with roots in other parts of the world can live side by side in harmony here in London.

"It is the home of people of all faiths and religions and has opened its arms to people from all over the world to make their home here.

"I know that following Wednesday’s events, the people of Tooting will come together as we always do.

"I would like to reassure the people of Tooting that I am working with the local police to make sure we have a strong police presence at this time and ensure our community remains safe.

"No one could fail to be shocked by the awful events which unfolded yesterday in Woolwich.

"The brutal murder of a member of our armed forces has thrown London into the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the victim's family and loved ones at this very difficult time."
