Five people have been arrested following a police chase in New Malden this afternoon.

Police were called at 3.22pm to reports of "suspects on premises" at a property in Bodley Road.

It is understood the men were arrested in St James' Close, on the other side of Malden Road.

Witnesses reported seeing police combing the nearby area, including Burlington Road, Malden Road and High Street.

A bar worker at The Watchman pub in High Street said: "I've seen quite a few police cars out there.

"Something was definitely going on."

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said five people were arrested and taken to a police station for further questioning.

He added a quantity of jewellery was also recovered.

Kingston Police has been warning residents of a suspected gang of burglars targeting the borough in recent weeks.

A total of 21 residential burglaries have taken place between May 14 and last Sunday, May 19.

Jewellery and electrical goods have been stolen from homes including seven in New Malden, four in Chessington and one apiece in Kingsnympton Park, Kingston Vale, and Surbiton.

Anyone who sees anything suspicious, such as people knocking on doors during the day, is being told to call 999, rather than the usual non-emergency 101 number.

Residents are also being reminded to secure all doors and windows before leaving home, and leave all valuables out of sight.
