A betting shop employee has been murdered in Morden.

Officers were called to Ladbrokes, in Aberconway Road, Morden, after paramedics discovered the dead man at 10.30am.

Several sources have said the man died of stab wounds, but this has not been officially confirmed.

The victim is understood to be a 55-year-old member of staff who had suffered serious injuries from an attack by another man.

A police spokesman said it appears the man was attacked in the shop by a lone, male suspect.

UPDATE (Sunday 10am): Police reveal CCTV images of a man they want to speak with in connection with this incident.

A former member of staff at Ladbrokes said the victim was a family man and had worked at the betting shop "for ages".

He said: "Perhaps Ladbrokes will now look at the viability of 'single-manning.'

"This is an issue that needs addressing and is about to get worse."

Another man who knew the victim described him as "the most kindest mildest of human being you could ever meet."

Rob Andrew said: "He was a long time employee of Ladbrokes, with a disabled wife and two young children.

"Sad sad news.  May his God go with him"

Police did not confirm whether the murder was committed in connection with another crime.

No details have yet been released by police about the suspect. There is also no information of any arrests made.

The spokesman said it is not known at this time whether any money was taken.

A cordon was put up around the Ladbrokes shop and Morden police office next door.

A Ladbrokes spokesman said: "Ladbrokes can confirm that following a serious incident this morning at a shop in Morden a staff member has died.

"The company's priority at this time is to provide the family, to whom we extend our deepest sympathies, with all the necessary support at this difficult time.

"We are also providing every required resource to assisting the police in their investigation."

Metropolitan Police officers from the homicide and serious crime command are investigating and are awaiting confirmation for the man's next of kin to be informed, before he is identified.

A post-mortem examination will be held at noon tomorrow at St George's Hospital mortuary.
