Hundreds of residents will soon be able to grow their own produce after more than 60 new allotment plots were officially opened.

Two acres of land at Tamworth Farm Allotments in Mitcham has been reclaimed after volunteers from Sustainable Merton, in partnership with Merton Council, cleared the site to create more than 60 allotments for residents and school children to learn and grow their own food.

The project is one of London’s biggest food growing projects and has been made possible by funding of £77,000 from the Food Fund, supported by the Big Lottery.

Tom Walsh from Sustainable Merton, said: " I would like to thank you all on behalf of Sustainable Merton for supporting the launch of our land reclamation project at Tamworth Farm Allotments.

"The day was blessed with lovely weather and a wonderful turnout of 70 supporters.

"We are very grateful to Councillor Andrew Judge for officiating, to Doug Napier and the open spaces team, Mark Robinson and the cemetery team and to Steve and all of the Sustainable Merton volunteers who made it all happen.

"The people who came to support us and sign up for new allotment plots came from all sections of the local community and really understood the underlying philosophy of what we want to achieve with this project."
