Parisian style boulevards could be installed in a busy dual carriageway.

Proposals have been put forward to build the boulevards in Balham High Road, Balham, which would make it easier for cyclists and pedestrians to use the road.

It would involve creating a segregated cycle route, but would allow drivers to use it when doing deliveries or visiting businesses in the area.

The vision has been suggested by cycling campaigner Jon Irwin, who said the plans would not remove any car parking space or road capacity.

Wandsworth Conservatives are also asking people for their views on the idea in their latest newsletter distributed to people living in the area.

The leaflet said: "Wandsworth Council is pulling together plans to create a Paris-style boulevard on the wide stretch of Balham High Road between Balham Station and Ritherdon Road.

"The plans, which will be submitted to Transport for London (TfL), will separate cyclists from other traffic and enable a more continental-style 'cafe culture'."

Mr Irwin, of Kettering Street, Tooting, said: "It is about making Balham High Road a safer and more attractive and pleasant place to be.

"It will give everybody who lives in the area a safe and attractive space where if they like to cycle from home into the town centre, they will be able to do it.

"If they need to drive they still will be able to do it."

Councillor Russell King, cabinet member for transport, said: "The Balham Boulevard scheme will continue the significant improvements that we have seen to Balham in recent years including significantly improving cycling facilities along a cycle super highway.

"Counillor Govindia and I recently met with the Deputy Mayor for Transport, Isobel Dedring, to discuss the Balham Boulevard and TfL are taking the scheme forward as a priority."

The plans will be submitted to TfL who manage the road.
