Campaigners are petitioning the council to install bike lockers in streets in a bid to get more people cycling.

The bike hangars, a scheme ran by Cyclehoop, offer secure on street parking for the vehicles.

They can fit up to six bicycles in at a time and are about the size of half a parking bay.

The scheme has already been adopted by Lambeth Council where 40 of the bike lockers have been installed.

Users who wish to store their bikes pay a fee, while Cyclehoop manages and cleans the lockers.

Wandsworth Cycling Campaign (WCC) believe it will encourage people who do not have space to store a bike to cycle.

Jon Irwin, campaigns co-ordinator, said: "The challenge for the local cycling group is reaching out to people who would like to cycle, but don't for many reasons.

"If lack of cycle parking where you live is an issue that stops you cycling, do get in touch so that you can perhaps have the first bike hangar in Wandsworth on your street."

A spokesperson for the council said: "We are keen to hear what people think about bike lockers, but before we can install any we would need to carry out formal consultation work with local residents to ensure they support the idea, and if they do, we would then need to carefully look at the best ways of providing them."
