Wimbledon Chase railway bridge will not be pretty in pink after Network Rail confirmed it will be repainted it in its original red - not pink as was orginally suggested.
Merton’s Dundonald Liberal Democrat team have been lobbying the company to clean up the bridge since January 2009.
Campaigners were suddenly told last week their work had been successful, but the bridge would be turning a salmon pink, sparking panicked speculation the change would look even worse.
Anthony Fairclough, of the Lib Dems said: "It’s been a two-year process to get them to do something about it.
"I don’t have terribly strong feelings about the colour it’s painted. Some residents are not terribly impressed - they probably think it’s going to be a kind of shocking pink."
On Tuesday Network Rail calmed fears confirming the bridge would be repainted, but it in is original red.
Work is due to begin in the coming weeks and due to be complete by the end of September.
