An aspiring actor who featured in Oscar winning musical Les Miserables has been nominated for a Croydon Champions award.

Anthony Portsmouth, 22, of South Norwood, has been put forward by his dad, Tony, for the Arts Champion category.

The student, who is currently studying Film Studies in Canterbury at the University of Kent, has worked tirelessly to get is foot in the door of the movie world.

Tony Portsmouth said he had nominated his son for the award for always trying to help promote the arts in Croydon. The former BRIT School student was a member of the Croydon Youth Theatre Organisation (CYTO).

The 22-year-old has often gone back to CYTO to help the next crop of youngsters with their performances and give them advice on breaking into the acting industry.

Anthony was an extra in Les Miserables and has now been awarded a scholarship to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York.

He has also performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Fairfield Halls.

Anthony is due to fly out to America in January and he is currently raising money to go towards his time in America, which will probably cost more than £50,000.

His dad said: "Anthony’s dedication is beyond reproach, working exceptionally long hours and making sure his performances are just right.

"Many university students would be out partying and boozing but Anthony works so hard to get where he wants to be.

Anthony said: "I have wanted to do this since secondary school. I had some great times at places like CYTO and the BRIT School who have really helped me on my journey.

"My parents have been so supportive and they have always backed the decisions I have made. I am really excited about what the future holds now."
